Columbus County Prepares to Host Another Chinese Delegation

WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) – Government and business leaders in Columbus County are preparing for another visit from Chinese officials, hoping the relationship will lead to investment and job growth in the county.

The delegation from Zhaoyuan City will arrive in Whiteville Monday afternoon and dine that night with county commissioners and other local leaders.

The group has a full agenda Tuesday, with plans to tour Black's Tire Service Corporate Headquarters, MaXPro Window Films and West Fraser Timber - the largest yellow pine lumber mill in the world, according to the Columbus County Economic Development Commission.

The Chinese delegation will also visit the plant micro-propagation lab at Southeastern Community College and travel to Wilmington for a tour of the State Port.

Columbus County hosted a group of officials from Zhaoyuan City in 2012. Gary Lanier, the county's economic development director, and several county commissioners traveled to China last spring.

Lanier said Monday a specific economic development project isn't behind the delegation's trip to Columbus County. The visit is meant to strengthen bonds and create a sister-city type relationship between the two communities, he explained.
